In 2020 she led the headquarters of presidential candidate Viktor Babaryko who was the main opponent of the incumbent "president." Maria and her smile inspired and united people to defend their rights. She was forcibly attempted to be taken out of Belarus  but at the border Maria tore up her passport. She was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment. For almost a year there has been no contact with her from prison.
