I appeal to High Representative of the European Union Mr. Josep Borrell
As you know, the Belarusians continue fighting against the dictatorship for their rights and freedoms. According to the human rights organization Viasna, the Belarusian Association of Journalists and the Association of Belarusian Students during this period, since 9 August 2020, at least 9 citizens of Belarus have been killed and 4644 cases of torture have been documented. At the beginning of April more than 35000 persons were detained and arrested, among them more than 500 journalists. There are 352 political prisoners in Belarus. Overall around 3000 criminal cases have been opened against civilians.
In March-April the repressions only increased: torture and violence in prisons have taken a new dimension. People are detained and arrested on the streets for the slightest attempt to express their disagreement with the dictatorship.
In April Lukashenka's parliament will pass laws under which the security apparatus will be licensed to use violence and murder, they will be able to use weapons at its own discretion against protesters. Any criticism of the authorities, participation in protests will carry up to 10 years in prison, advocates' offices and the right to individual activities of advocates will be abolished. The media could be abolished by a decision of the Minister of propaganda.
The media will not be able to broadcast public events.
Internet blackouts will be legalised.
Since April 2021, the next stage of the most massive repression in a decade of European history has begun. Political rights and freedoms are terminated in Belarus. European newspapers will not write about it on the front pages, but this is real life in the centre of Europe.
As a European, I would like to appeal to the Europeans, on behalf of all Belarusians, who are imprisoned, oppressed, dismissed, fired, forced to emigrate: What shall we, as representatives of the democratic forces of Belarus do so that the European Union could take decisive steps to save the Belarusian people? What additional arguments need to be presented? I get these questions every day from the Belarusians and it is important for me to give them an open answer.
