It is honestly a little insulting that one of the greatest alternative bands ever to crawl out of the Pacific Northwest is still playing clubs while half the bands they influenced went on to become stadium attractions. The Melvins helped teach Nirvana — and, by extension, a substantial chunk of the Seattle grunge scene — how to make heavy music sound genuinely dangerous, weird and completely uninterested in playing by the rules. Kurt Cobain and other musicians from that scene never exactly hid where they got some of those ideas. And yet here we are in 2026, watching the Melvins in Asheville while their musical descendants fill arenas. Buzz Osborne remains the absolute God of alternative metal: still weird, still obnoxious, still impossibly heavy, and apparently still unwilling to become respectable. And honestly, that's probably for the best. Watching the Melvins is never anything less than a fucking pleasure.
