Muse came to Charlotte to prove that the old songs still hit — and thankfully, there were plenty of them. The show took place outdoors at Truliant Amphitheater, where it was so hot and humid that at times it felt less like a rock concert and more like a free sauna session. We skipped the opening acts: a bunch of whiny no-names, even if one of them did come all the way from Australia. We were there for Muse — and we didn't regret it! Thankfully for longtime fans, the band leaned heavily into the classics, pretty much skipping over Muse's most embarrassing art-rock phase. Hysteria, Supermassive Black Hole, Map of the Problematique, Psycho, Plug in Baby, Map of the Problematique, Uprising, Knights of Cydonia, Starlight — that's what we came for. The biggest surprise, though, was the new material. Songs from The Wow! Signal turned out to be surprisingly good live. Maybe there's still hope for Muse after all.
