WAILIN STORMS kicked off the touring cycle for their outstanding fifth album, The Arsonist, with a hometown show in Durham, North Carolina. Now backed by the legendary French independent label Season of Mist, the band is taking its crushing blend of sludge, noise rock, grunge and post-metal across North America—and it all started here.
The venue was the legendary Stanczyks. Cozy? Absolutely. Ideal for a wall of amplifiers and earth-shaking riffs? Not exactly. By the time WAILIN STORMS hit the stage, the room had turned into a sweaty pressure cooker. The permanently blood-red lighting didn't do our camera any favors either, making everyone look like they had just walked out of a horror movie.
Before the headliners, local post-metal outfit MAKE completely stole our attention. Ignore the unfortunate Google-proof band name—they deliver riffs worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with bands like Neurosis or Cult of Luna. Seriously, check them out.
We completely missed the opening crust punk band Snide. Durham's bars happened. We regret nothing.
As for WAILIN STORMS... trying to pin them down to a single genre feels pointless. Noise rock? Grunge? Sludge? Southern rock? Post-metal? The answer is simply "yes." Their Texas roots are still there in the massive guitar tone, but years in North Carolina have transformed that foundation into something darker, richer and impossible to categorize.
Some bands are easier to experience than to explain.
Luckily, WAILIN STORMS are currently on tour across North America—so if they stop anywhere near you, go see them.
