Lithuania closed several border checkpoints with Belarus because of meteorological probes — basically balloons — used by smugglers to send cigarettes across the border. Now Vilnius insists everything is fine. Earlier, however, the Lithuanian president’s adviser admitted that this happened not thanks to any special measures, but simply because the wind is blowing the other way.
The political winds in Lithuania, meanwhile, have shifted sharply after the President’s statements. He said that Belarusian law enforcement had been tasked with investigating the situation — and their verdict was clear: the organizers of the smuggling are Lithuanian citizens, and in most cases, the balloons launched from Belarus are also sent up by… Lithuanians. More on what everyone near the border already knew — from Igor Tur.
